Tom Stanley (Last updated 7th November 2018)

It is with great pleasure we announce that the snooker room at PSD Sports Lounge has been named ‘The Tom Stanley Snooker Room’ in honour of Tom who also received the North Merseyside’s Snooker Leagues prestigious Paul Hunter Trophy last season for outstanding contribution to Merseyside snooker.

Many of us have had the privilege of playing alongside Tom in the Liverpool League for over 20 years. He is now in his 81st year and must be one of the oldest players across Merseyside still competing to a very good standard. He is a dogged competitor who always gives his best for any team he plays for; his standard has rarely slipped down the years. His current handicaps in the NMSL and Liverpool Leagues are considerably lower that many players half or quarter of his age, testament to his strong all-round game.

More importantly, as well as Tom the player you get Tom the gentleman and Tom the team mate. He always tries his hardest but is the one of the most sporting players we have every played with or against. He epitomizes the sportsmanship and etiquette we should all strive to achieve, every captain in the league would love to have six Tom Stanley’s to pick from every week. He always acknowledges opponents good play, never reacts badly to defeat, even when his opponent has had lots of running, always offers a drink and is willing to have a chat, win or lose. Tom the team mate will do anything to help the team, he does more than his fair share of referring duties, gives lifts without complaint, steps in as captain when required.

Tom’s contribution to several of our local leagues cannot be underestimated. He served with distinction on the Crosby League committee for many years, he has provided much needed sponsorship money to the Liverpool League, has played in inter-league teams, sometimes at short notice when other players have let the league down. Even when not in the best of health Tom will endeavour to attend prize presentation evenings even if he has nothing to collect.
