Ormskirk & District Amateur Snooker League (Weekly Report 19/03 /24 & 21/03/24) The Miss Rule For 2023-24 Season The miss rule will remain exactly the same as last season as we all felt it worked very well so it is as follows for the forthcoming 2023-24 season. In DIVISION 2 LEAGUE MATCHES, ALL SECOND DIVISION CUP MATCHES & ALL DIVISION 2 INDIVIDUAL & PAIRS MATCHES there will be ONE compulsory miss awarded and NO further misses called after this. If a FIRST DIVISION team OR player is playing a SECOND DIVISION team OR player then just TWO COMPULSORY MISSES ONLY TO BE CALLED AND THEN MOVE ON SO NO DISCRETION GIVEN TO THE MARKER In DIVISION 1 LEAGUE MATCHES, ALL FIRST DIVISION MATCHES & ALL DIVISION 1 INDIVIDUAL & PAIRS MATCHES then the rule is UNCHANGED from previous seasons so it's TWO compulsory misses awarded then over to the marker's discretion. Alternate Picks Alternate pairings to now be used in LEAGUE MATCHES & KENNEY CUP GROUP STAGE MATCHES. Home captain to provide the first name followed by the away captain providing two names. After the completion of the first two frames a third name to be nominated by the home captain followed by two names from the away captain. Once again, and finally, the fifth name to be nominated by the home captain followed by the final two names from the away captain. Player Handicaps 2023-24 List The Player Handicap list can be found on our website under the DOCUMENTS section. Representatives are expected to print this out and display in your appropriate club and maybe a good idea would be for all captains or a team player to take a picture of it and store on your phone. THE PLAYER HANDICAP LIST WILL BE UPDATED ONCE DURING THE ENTIRETY OF THE SEASON WHICH WILL BE AT THE CHRISTMAS BREAK BUT THE COMMITTEE HAVE THE POWER TO AMEND ANY PLAYER'S HANDICAP AT ANY TIME IF WE FEEL IT IS INCORRECT SO OBVIOUSLY UNFAIR. Thank you for your co-operation in advance. White Balls available to League Clubs at Trade price Dear club members, we have managed to source a supply of White Balls from Thurstons at trade price and happy to supply these at cost to any clubs who would like to replace their white balls. Over time white balls become lighter than the rest of the set of balls due to the constant abrasion they suffer striking other balls and the abrasive nature of our chalk from our tips over years of use. This then causes the white to become “lighter” hence the phrase you will have heard of 'Light White'. If playing with a “light white” you may notice that it reacts differently on shots to what you would expect meaning shots with top/follow through are harder to play and shots with screw back are effectively easier. Sometimes you may stun the white and it actually comes back 3 or 4 inches causing you to lose position! Balls should be within 3 grammes weight of each other. The whites we have are all around 142 grammes. The league now has an accurate scale so please contact Mike Davies if you would like your snooker balls weighed prior to purchase or to help you match them up as best as you can. We believe as a snooker league that every team should have the best equipment when practising and inviting opponent teams to their club and a good quality correctly weighted white is integral to this. Each White is priced at just £9.12. Early Start Matches Please be aware that matches played at Farmers Club will ALWAYS be a 7.30pm start. Thank you for your co-operation in advance. Reminder – Submitting Results Can I ask all team captains that if you are borrowing a player from another team (within the league rules) that you text myself (Barry Adlington) IMMEDIATELY to inform me of this and I will place that players name in your team list. This enables you to submit your result correctly. Thank you for your co-operation on this matter. Neutral Venues Now On Website Neutral venues for Semi-finals & Finals can now be viewed on our website. This obviously makes it easier for players to view their information without having to contact myself or wait until they are next in their club to consult the monthly circular. Circular. Olympic Bowling Club Dress Code I have been asked by the Olympic BC committee to remind everyone around the league of their dress code when visiting the club. Smart jeans and trainers are now allowed to be worn but they still have the minimum requirement of a collared shirt or collared t-shirt. This has not been adhered to recently and can I remind everyone that we must respect the club rules for future visits. Thank you. Division 1 This time around we saw league action continue after last week’s break for Le Rose Cup quarter-final action in the First Division of the Ormskirk & District Amateur Snooker League. Pace-setters, Fleetwood Hesketh SSC clashed with second placed, Aughton Institute E, this week in a potential mouth-watering contest and at the conclusion of proceedings it saw a somewhat predictable 3-3 stalemate although the Fleetwood outfit did win their three frames with some authority. The contest started with frames one and two being split between the two sides to see things in the melting pot at 1-1. The next two frames were also divided between both teams and this made for an exciting end to things as the scoreline read 2-2 and certainly there for the taking. The final two frames of the encounter, yet again, saw the two frames shared between them both to reach the draw at the conclusion. This result sees the Fleetwood Hesketh SSC lads remain those five points clear and look exceptionally well placed with just three league matches until the end of the campaign whilst the Aughton E boys continue in second slot, just one point clear of the team directly below them. The encounter also saw Fleetwood's, Jon Holmes in fantastic form with a magnificent break of 86 in his frame success to earn him this week’s ‘Break of the Week’ accolade. Fleetwood’s, Mark Hopgood was also amongst the half-century break makers with a superb break of 61 in his frame win. Jon's break began with an excellent opening red pot to gain ideal position on the black. After dispatching that black ball, Jon proceeded to take another three reds, two with blacks and the other one with the pink ball, with that fine, methodical rhythm of his, with pinpoint potting and very solid positional play, to move onto thirty one. The next red ball pot for him was a little tricky to get the cue ball out and up for his colour but after dispatching that red he unluckily flicked another red and this left him out of position. Jon contemplated his next shot for some time and decided to commit to a long-range, half-ball yellow ball pot, off its own spot and into its own pocket. He played the shot with huge aplomb as he successfully potted that yellow swinging the cue ball off two cushions and down the table where he finished ideally on a choice of red balls. A further six reds were all taken, with four of them with blacks and the other two with blue balls with, again, decisive potting and position to now move onto seventy eight and his first Ormskirk League century firmly on the horizon. Jon potted his next red to sit nicely on the black once again but the final three reds all lay very close to each other although two of them would pot comfortably into certain pockets. He dispatched the black where he stunned the cue ball over towards the reds but finished tricky on them. Jon decided to dig down slightly and take a real awkward red to middle but very unfortunately he narrowly missed it to bring an end to a marvellous break on 86. Jon joined the Ormskirk League at the commencement of the 2015-16 season were he has been a valuable member of the Les Dodd SC, Southport Conservative Club & Fleetwood Hesketh SSC teams ever since and already built up a very impressive roll of honour both on team level and individually. In Jon’s first five seasons his side captured the league crown on each of those years. They have also practically owned our two team cup competitions of late by winning the Kenney Cup for the last three campaigns and taking the Le Rose Cup for three of the last four seasons. Jon was runner-up in last year’s Individual Championship and he has also captured the Individual Handicap on two occasions in 2016-17 & 2019-20. Jon also became a member of our Ormskirk Representative last season and has had an immediate impact! He was making his debut in the UK League Snooker tournament, in which our side triumphed for an incredible fourth time, and Jon had an amazing tournament, especially with it being his first one and I’m sure he’ll be a valuable member of the squad for years to come. Upholland Social went into battle with Rainford X SSC this time and it saw the Upholland boys record their third successive 4-2 success at such a vital stage of the current season. This match began with both teams clinching one frame each of the initial two frames to see it delicately balanced at 1-1. The trend continued into frames three and four as, once again, both teams took a frame apiece to see the contest up for grabs at 2-2. It was at this point in the concluding two frames that the Upholland outfit moved up a gear to win both these frames and seal another vitally important victory. The outcome sees the Upholland Social lads unchanged in third position in the league standings but have halved their deficit on the side in second and they now trail by just a single point. The Rainford X side drop into sixth in the league proceedings. The contest also saw Upholland's, Steve Mobbs in fine nick with a nice break of 32 in his frame success. Olympic BC B met Stanley Club A, this particular week, and it saw neither team being able to cement a win in a 3-3 stalemate. This encounter started with the Stanley A lads very quickly into their stride as they won both the opening two frames to move into a commanding 2-0 lead. The middle two frames saw the Olympic B team, much to their credit, hit straight back by sealing both frames to soon reach parity at 2-2. Frames five and six were divided between both outfits but this was make much easier for the Olympic BC B side as the Stanley Club A boys could only field a five man team but to their credit they manage to grab the one frame contested to force the draw. This result sees the Olympic BC B guys drop into fourth spot but still sit just two points behind the side directly above them in the league table but lie some seven points adrift of the leaders. The other match played this time around saw Aughton Institute A come up against struggling Scarisbrick NSC and it saw the Aughton A side continue their fine form as they produced a very solid 5-1 win. Before I go into the details of the match I would like to give Graeme Russell a good mention on how fantastic it is to see him competing in our league again after his battle with big health issues over the last few months and to make things extra special for him was he won his frame for himself and his team. Brilliant to see you back Gra!!!The contest began with the Aughton A lads straight out the blocks by taking the first two frames to move into an authoritative 2-0 advantage. The next two frames saw both teams take one frame each but this still saw the Aughton Institute A outfit in charge at 3-1. The last two frames saw the Aughton A boys complete their success by winning both frames. The outcome sees the Aughton Institute A team remaining in fifth position where they find themselves some eight points adrift of the summit. The match also saw Aughton A’s, Barry Warnock in very good touch with a nice break of 30 in his frame victory. Other notable break was – M Brown (Fleetwood Hesketh SSC) 42. Division 2 This particular week was a set aside week in Division Two for any catch-up matches so everything is bang up-to-date going into the final two weeks of the current campaign. The one contest played saw Aughton Institute D clash with club compatriots, Aughton Institute B in yet another Aughton ‘Derby’ match. The opening two frames saw both outfits clinch one frame apiece to see proceedings delicately balanced at 1-1. The middle two frames saw the Aughton D side move up a gear as they took both frames to move into a commanding 3-1 lead. The final two frames were, once again, divided between each side and this was enough to see the Aughton Institute D lads over the line to their hard fought success. This result sees both teams unchanged in league positions as the Aughton B boys sit in fifth position whilst the Aughton D team occupy sixth place. The match also saw Aughton D’s, Antony Moy in very good touch with a nice break of 25 in his frame success. Other notable break was – G Dwyer (Aughton Institute D) 23. |
