*** Southport Snooker League News *** Southport Snooker League News *** Southport Snooker League News *** 1st Division… The Fleetwood Hesketh A team went down swinging all the way to the end, recording their biggest victory of the season, a 6-0 full house whitewash of the Birkdale Cons A team, to relinquish their crown yes, but put a four-point cushion between themselves and Tarleton B in the table. Mark Horan had no answer to Dean Oliver in their opening frame, two breaks of 32 put towards a dominated 70-18 win, Jon Holmes equally as destructive, breaks of 27 and 25 seeing off Jamie Barr 81-48 and two nil up in a blink. Gareth racked up his third away break on the trot of over 50 to beat Phil Fitz, a break of 54 being put towards Gareth’s 94-47 win, Ste Crane completing the 4-0 clean sweep of the opening four frames with a solid 70-56 victory over Dave Blease. The hits kept on coming for the Marshside Mob as Martin Brown proved too good for Paul Shawcross, taking him out 84-66, Ian Shepherd bringing up his 10th win of the season with a 54-20 won over Martin Deeney. In beating the Churchtown Cons A team 4-2 this week Tarleton B are still in contention to make it a 1-2 for Tarleton come the final pot in the league in a couple of weeks’ time, though may still need Fleetwood to drop some points to do so. Dean Bond may have settled in to life at Churchtown now after leaving Tarleton but his 50-37 defeat to Pete Burns meant he’s lost all his match ups against any Tarleton Player this season, zero wins from six played…!! Les Prescott ran out an easy 70-32 winner over Dale Roberts to square things up 1-apiece from the off. Richard Gaskell kept Trevor Wetton out of the balls long enough to beat his opponent 17-62, Richard’s 15th win of the season, Sean Bynoe making it 3-1 with a solid 60-23 win over James Shaw. Though Churchtown have been slipping down the table recently they should be safe for next season in the 1st Division, Mick Coxon making sure his team wasn’t on the end of a real thumping when beating Dane Barker 64-12, Rob Smallman having little to celebrate when Dave Pendry snuffed him out 40 points to 3 in the final frame. Banks A may have 10 wins under their belt this season, only Tarleton A have more wins on 13, but they do suffer big defeats, this 5-1 thumping the Southport Cons C team gave them being their sixth this season, though their was a major highlight for them on the night. Connor Ormerod got a right royal pasting from Gavin Robinson, the young ‘wannbe’ on the end of a ton of misery going down 106-28 to Gav, Neil fairing slightly better, if only that he lost out 57-33 to Kev Smith. Alan Johnson lost out to an in-form Mark Hopgood 78-28 with Lee Holmes taking center stage for the night when making a wonderful and personal high break in the league of 92, just unable to get to that magical three figure break. Coming just up short of the right side of the blue after sinking the final red, Lee had to get the white up and down the table to get on to the final yellow, agonizingly failing to do so and missing out on Century immortality. Unlucky Lee, great effort all the same…!! Mark Rollins lost out 22-75 to John Rimmer who was once again in back in amongst the breaks, John making a lovely break of 40, his fifth consecutive break on the trot in the league now. Not wanting to feel left out for putting his name down on the break charts, Ryan Curry proved too hot for Martin Sephton, running out a 78-32 winner, Ryan producing a season high break of 32 to so and complete the 5-1 rout. 2nd Division… The Bretherton A team may sit in second, and it’s a great position to be in with 2 matches to go, but the 5-1 thrashing that they had handed to them by the S & B Cricket lads this week won’t help much going in to those last two matches now, will it…!! By far their worst away result of the season and it could have been worse having gone 5-0 down from the off. The Cricketers Paul Parker played too strong for Phil Iddon taking it 70-43 in the end, the Legend that is Gordon Russell, making a guest appearance for the visitors, only just lost out to Dave Palmer to the final black 66-59 but it was still 2-0 down. That didn’t improve much as Russ Thornley had a going day with the cue beating Alan Venables with a bit to spare 83-46, James Payne inflicting Bretherton to a second black ball defeat with a 55-50 win over John Leak. Another close frame went the way of the home side as Dave Green nicked it 48-39 from Ed Moulton, Simon Moulton saving a complete disaster as he beat Lewis Thornley 55-32 and keep the in the mix come two weeks’ time. Despite taking a 2-0 lead the Fleetwood Hesketh B team could only draw 3-3 with the visiting Churchtown Cons C team failing to get that all important win and put the squeeze on the top teams in the division. Andy Bridge and John Gearie got the Marshside lads off to a great start, Andy eating Graham Marshall 59-45, John taking care of Peter Parkinson 57-33, perfect. It’s been a while since the Fleetwood lads have tasted success, January the 18th to be precise, and against Churchtown as well, and when Neil Rimmer saw off Malcolm Green 60-43 that win was well in reach. But Adam Rothwell, not for the first time as Captain, put in a solid performance to get his side up and running, a 74-46 win over Chris Ashcroft, Adam’s tenth win of the season. Churchtown themselves need the points as they are looking back over their shoulders a little to a possible relegation season, fresh from their recent promotion. So, with Tony Baldwin beating Larry Scholes on the final colours 55-45 and Ken Dumican putting in one of his best away performances of the season, a 81-41 win against Al Sutton, it helps them more than the draw for Fleetwood we could suggest. Scarisbrick A came out the 4-2 winners over their divisional and basement club rival, the Southport Cons D team to not only put six points between themselves and the Bath Street side but drag Churchtown down below them in the table to 8th spot. Chris Starkie lost out to Tony Brookfield 31-58, Tony’s 10th win of the season, Ian Tinsley squaring things up with a good 63-35 win over Mark Abbott. Steve McClusky snuck the final black over Dave Oakes to beat him 48-43, as Ron Calder dispensed with any end of frame drama in his comfortable 70-29 win against Chris Alker. But the last two frames belonged to the Bullen Lanes lads as Eddie Stockley got back to winning ways with a 68-38 win over Alec Davies, Graham Ball providing the ‘coup de grace’ with a final colour 47-37 win against Tony Halliwell. With the last match of the season for Graham Balls Band of Merry Men being an Open Week, next week’s trip to play Churchtown Cons C is a big one now, win that, happy days…!! 3rd Division… Not a lot to separate them in the table, not on stats either, so we shouldn’t have been surprised that Scarisbrick B and Birkdale Cons B played out a 3-3 draw this week. Wayne Cooper, who on his day is the best player in the division, completely outplayed Reg Dobson to beat him 97-47, breaks of 48 and 31 proving that fact. Geoff Tyas managed to beat young James Simpson on the final colours, 1-apiece from the off, something that carried on through the night. Peter Simpson got the better of John Stringfellow to beat him 54-29, Matt Lowery just had one of those nights with nothing seemingly wanting to drop, losing out 9-47 to David Robinson, Desmond all around. Mick Hodge lost at home for the first time in four as Norman Taylor beat him 60-26, Ian Lowery scoring his highest individual frame score when beating John Warnick 83-35 completing the 3-3 draw on the night. The Churchtown Cons D team thrashed the Birkdale Cons C team 5-1 this week with a little slice of Lady Luck helping things along for them in the end. Saul Kemp scored well against Kenny Atkins, but it would be Kenny who would take it on the final colours 80-71, as Mike Pickles took his frame on the final black 52-56 from John McGee to give the visitors a fortunate 2-0 lead. Dave Quinn, fresh from gallivanting away on a golfing holiday, well it is golfing weather now, floored Ian Tyson 61-37, Trevor landing his final knock out blow to Chris Aughton on the final black, taking bay the narrowest of margins 50-51 in the end. At Least Russ Walsh managed to get the job done before the final colours, seeing off Paul Murphy 64-40, John Melvin getting something back from the night of close calls and black ball drama, beating Steve Mentha 62-37 and prevent their first Full House wipe out for the season. The ‘Battle at the Basement’ went the way of the Fleetwood Hesketh B team as they saw off Southport Cons B with a 4-2 win, needing the final two frames to do it mind. The opening frames went the way of the Marshside Mob from the off as Max Riley took out Andrew Marsh 74-24, Stefan Whyte needing the final colours before settling it 52-43 over Karl Bellman. But credit to the Bath Street lads they fought back as Guy Riley went down 15-47 to Phillip Marsh, Chris Peters sinking the final black against Ian Brownhill to take it 50-46 and 2-a piece, game on…!! But it would be the Marshside lads who would have the final say on the night as Tony Gowland recorded a fine back-2-back wins in the league with a 53-43 win over John Barton, Dave Brown completing the home win when beating Jim Blackhurst 39-26 and breathing room at the foot of the table for now. All the best, keep smiling and enjoy your snooker Chris Gill Gen Sec
