Hello all, I am writing to you with news from the AGM held last month and with an update on when the 2022-23 season will start and the line ups in the division.

Firstly, the AGM had a very low turnout, which to be fair was held in the middle of the hot summer we have had this year, but I think that with the people who made it we had a successful meeting.

Reg Dobson of Birkdale Cons has joined the ranks of the Snooker Committee, so we wish him well, with the rest of the committee all staying on for another season for good measure.

Mick Coxon, the league Treasurer, stated that the incoming of the League fee’s and all payments due was very slow, with some clubs still short towards full payment. All Delegates will now be charged with getting ALL outstanding payments to the League and not relying on Mick chasing each individual team Captain.

The league set up was revealed with the 3 divisions as standard, 9 teams in both of the 1st & 2nd Division with the 3rd having 11 teams confirmed at the time. The Southport Cons A team & Tarleton C teams were promoted to the 1st division with only S & B relegated to the 2nd Division. Bretherton A came up from the 3rd division with Scarisbrick C staying put. At the meeting the 3rd Division was set to hold 11 teams but since then Fleetwood Hesketh B have folded meaning we now have a 10 team division.

It was also noted that Alan Parker’s team from Our Lady’s would now be taking up residence at Scarisbrick as the Formby club was no longer an option to Alan and his team to play snooker at that venue anymore. Of course it is a shame we lost another venue but we havnt lost the team which is also very important.

The Miss Rule was yet again brought up with the note that we don’t actually have anything in the League Rules that covers this issue. I said that I would draw up a draft of what the rule should and shouldn’t cover and would update the League with this before the new season is to start.

The Frank Lodge pairing is to return to the coin toss at the beginning of the match to determine who puts down the first name of the match after it was found that the blind pairing we currently have is very much out of favour with the majority of the League Captains.

In Any Other Business it was discussed and voted on that the Individual cup games be played under the same handicapped start that all players have in the league matches. It was passed that the James Yates, JJ Birch & Atherton cup competitions will be played as what each individual player’s handicap is at the time of play in the league.

In other news, the new season will start on the following dates; 3rd division to start Wednesday the 7th of September and the 1st & 2nd divisions to start Thursday the 8th of September

It just leaves me to say a big thank you to all of the players within the Southport Snooker league as it is you who make the league be what it is, and I for one hope it stays around for a long time to come.

Good luck to you all, stay safe, and keep smiling...
