Ormskirk & District Amateur Snooker League

(Weekly Report 15/04/25)

The Miss Rule For 2024-25 Season

The miss rule will remain exactly the same as the previous two seasons as we all felt it worked very well so it is as follows for the forthcoming 2024-25 season.

In DIVISION 2 LEAGUE MATCHES, ALL SECOND DIVISION CUP MATCHES & ALL DIVISION 2 INDIVIDUAL & PAIRS MATCHES there will be ONE compulsory miss awarded and NO further misses called after this.

If a FIRST DIVISION team OR player is playing a SECOND DIVISION team OR player then just TWO COMPULSORY MISSES ONLY TO BE CALLED AND THEN MOVE ON SO NO DISCRETION GIVEN TO THE MARKER

In DIVISION 1 LEAGUE MATCHES, ALL FIRST DIVISION MATCHES & ALL DIVISION 1 INDIVIDUAL & PAIRS MATCHES then the rule is UNCHANGED from previous seasons so it's TWO compulsory misses awarded then over to the marker’s discretion.

Alternate Picks

Alternate pairings will continue to be used in LEAGUE MATCHES & KENNEY CUP GROUP STAGE MATCHES. Home captain to provide the first name followed by the away captain providing two names. After the completion of the first two frames a third name to be nominated by the home captain followed by two names from the away captain. Once again, and finally, the fifth name to be nominated by the home captain followed by the final two names from the away captain.

Player Handicaps 2024-25 List

The Player Handicap list can be found on our website under the DOCUMENTS section. Representatives are expected to print this out and display in your appropriate club and maybe a good idea would be for all captains or a team player to take a picture of it and store on your phone. THE PLAYER HANDICAP LIST WILL BE UPDATED ONCE DURING THE ENTIRETY OF THE SEASON WHICH WILL BE AT THE CHRISTMAS BREAK BUT THE COMMITTEE HAVE THE POWER TO AMEND ANY PLAYER'S HANDICAP AT ANY TIME IF WE FEEL IT IS INCORRECT SO OBVIOUSLY UNFAIR. Thank you for your co-operation in advance.

Early Start Matches

Please be aware that matches played at Farmers Club will ALWAYS be a 7.30pm start. Thank you for your co-operation in advance.

Reminder – Submitting Results

Can I ask all team captains that if you are borrowing a player from another team (within the league rules) that you text myself (Barry Adlington) IMMEDIATELY to inform me of this and I will place that players name in your team list. This enables you to submit your result correctly. Thank you for your co-operation on this matter.

Neutral Venues Now On Website

Neutral venues for Semi-finals & Finals can now be viewed on our website. This obviously makes it easier for players to view their information without having to contact myself or wait until they are next in their club to consult the monthly circular.

Olympic Bowling Club Dress Code

I have been asked by the Olympic BC committee to remind everyone around the league of their dress code when visiting the club. Smart jeans and trainers are now allowed to be worn but they still have the minimum requirement of a collared shirt or t-shirt. This has not been adhered to recently and can I remind everyone that we must respect the club rules for future visits. Thank you.

Division 1

This time around we saw the final week of league action in the First Division of the Ormskirk & District Amateur Snooker League for the 2024-25 season.

Leaders, Aughton Institute E (formerly Maghull RBL A), chasing their first Division One title in twenty-five years, took on their club compatriots, Aughton Institute A knowing four points would be enough to lift the crown without relying on other results. At the end of proceedings they certainly achieved their ultimate goal in style as they engineered a fabulous 6-0 whitewash of their opponents to seal that elusive title after all those years. The result saw them triumph by a very comfortable seven points in the end and their season is far from over as they have their Kenney Cup final to look forward to on 8th May. The match also saw, quite aptly, Aughton E’s, Robbie Wilson grab the final ‘ Break of the Week’ of the current campaign with a superb, half-century break of 59 in his frame win.

Robbie’s break started after his opponent missed. Robbie took his first red into a centre pocket screwing back for the black ball. He dispatched that black ball and there was a few loose reds around a small cluster and he took them with black and pink balls to soon reach thirty. On potting his fifth red, he came a little straight on the black which he tried to force in creating an angle and took it with aplomb. Robbie got nicely on his next red, followed by another pink ball, red and the black to take him through the half-century mark and onto fifty two. Another red was dispatched by Robbie and another pink ball into the centre pocket to reach fifty nine and then he was faced with a tricky next red which he very unfortunately missed to bring to an end a terrific break on 59.

Robbie started playing in the Ormskirk League at the commencement of the 1997-98 season for Stanley Club were he represented the B team playing in the First Division. At the start of the 1999-00 campaign the team became Stanley A, apart from the 2008-09 season as they became the B side once again, but his team were back to the A status the following term, and he remained there to the end of the 2011-12 season when the team sadly broke up. Robbie was part of the winning Stanley Club A team that captured the Le Rose Cup in 2003-04. On a personal note, Robbie captured the JF Wills Handicap crown in season 2017-18, a competition that getting more and more competitive as each campaign goes by. He also won the 2010-11 Pairs Handicap title with his team mate and good friend, Robbie Radford. They were also runners-up in 2006-07. Robbie didn't played in the league for a couple of years but came back at the start of the 2014-15 campaign when he signed for Maghull RBL A and has been an ever-present ever since and it saw him as a valuable member of that side after they sealed the second running of the Division One Merit League in his first season. He also moved with that team for the commencement of the 2016-17 season to Aughton Institute and competes in the Aughton Institute E side. Robbie has also represented our Ormskirk representative sides a number of times in Merseyside & UK League Snooker tournaments in recent seasons.

The next match saw second placed, Stanley Club, meet Defending Champions and the side in third position, Fleetwood Hesketh SSC with both teams still holding slim title chances but certainly the runners-up berth was at stake as well. The Stanley Outfit held a two-point advantage over their rivals but in rather an exceptionally rare event where both teams could only field a five man side. At the conclusion of affairs it saw The Fleetwood boys come away with a comprehensive 4-1 victory. This outcome saw the Fleetwood Hesketh lads leap-frog their opponents and into second position in the final standings, just a single point ahead of the Stanley Club outfit. The contest saw Fleetwood’s skipper, Jon Holmes in fine nick again with a very nice break of 42 in his frame success. This win was also more than enough to seal the Division One Highest Ranked player award, well done Jon!!!

Upholland Social came up against Olympic BC B and at the conclusion of the evening it saw the Upholland lads equal their best win of the season with a terrific 5-1 win over the Olympic B team. This result sees the Upholland Social outfit move off the foot of the league table and up into their sixth slot finishing position. Meanwhile, despite their reversal the Olympic BC B boys ended in fourth spot. This encounter also saw Olympic B’s, Paul Williams in good touch with a nice break of 33 but unfortunately for Paul wasn’t quite enough to clinch his frame.

The other match played this week saw Rainford X SSC go into battle with Scarisbrick NSC and it was the Rainford X lads who finished their campaign on a high note with a solid 4-2 success. The outcome sees the Rainford X side finish in a creditable fifth whilst the Scarisbrick NSC side ended in eighth.

Other notable breaks this week were – C Connelly (Olympic BC B) 31 & A Singleton (Upholland Social) 30.
